INFOGRAPHIC: The Rise of the Planet of the Apps

They’ve grown big and fast. They’re rampant in Asia. Now they’re making us pay.

Today App Annie unveils the 7 key trends you need to know about in the “Rise of the Planet of the Apps”. App Annie’s premium service - ‘App Annie Intelligence’ – employs cutting-edge statistical and data models to generate the most accurate market estimates available for app stores today. Companies like EA, Microsoft, Nokia, Sega and Tencent already rely on App Annie to identify macro trends in today's international app store economy.

1. East Asia - Land of the Rising Downloads
East Asia was a fertile land for Apple in 2011. In particular, China saw a 298% increase in downloads and a 187% increase in revenue, whilst Japan saw a 98% increase in downloads, and a 88% increase in revenue. These markets are now significant not just because of their sheer size, but also the growth rate. These markets are becoming increasingly important for international app publishers - notably apps such as Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja already have huge audiences in these regions. Look for international app publishers to continue to raise their game in their understanding of localization, Asian tastes for UI and local marketing channels. To start, here's a glimpse of the current top apps in China and Japan

2. Norway - Planet of big money downloads
In a global comparison of average revenue per app downloaded, Norway has emerged top at $0.37 per download, nine times more than up-and-coming superpower China.* When looking at app store monetization, it appears there are only very loose correlations between GDP per capita and $ per download by country. To get the full equation, one needs to consider other factors including smartphone penetration and local currency support.

3. Biggest prize money in the US (and Japan)
The #1 grossing app in the US generates nearly 10x the revenue of the #1 app in China.* The most surprising insight is that the top app in Japan earns 90% compared to the US for a country that has 1/6 the smartphone population (according to analysts). What’s significant is that you need only acquire a fraction of the users in Japan to earn the same revenue as in the US.

4. In-App Purchase (IAP) revenues rocket.
The absolute growth of freemium and in-app purchase revenues has been well-documented. We go one level deeper to see if apps with in-app purchases actually earn more revenue on a per app basis.

The result - In Jan 2011, the top 100 apps with IAP and without IAP were monetizing the same amount per app. By Dec 2011, apps with IAP were monetizing 2.2X more than apps without IAP. If you have a great product, you’ll raise your revenue ceilings with a freemium rather than premium model. We've seen leading publishers like EA, Glu, and Gameloft place bets on freemium in the past year with considerable revenue gains.

5. Taking flight - Growth rate of iPad downloads
"I already have a Macbook Air, and an iPhone, so why do I need an iPad?"  Despite this common and yet unresolved issue, downloads on iPad for 2011 have grown 200%, compared to 70% for downloads on iPhone. Data suggests that the tablet will continue to convert notebook and smartphone owners at an increasing rate, and eventually represent 60% of the PC market by 2015 (SOURCE: IDC and Gartner).

6. iPad - A significant slice of the iOS pie
Revenues from iPad apps are now contributing to 30% of overall iOS revenue, with iPhone and iTouch app revenues contributing 70%. The significant revenue share validates Apple's continued efforts in iPad innovation and marketing, which would soon manifest in the rumored upcoming release of iPad 3. This should also be of significant interest to Google, who have yet to establish their own consumer market for tablets.

7. iPad - double the dollar sunshine
The iPad, at 2.13X more pixels, is generating 2.4X more revenue per download compared to the iPhone. Other factors that could contribute to this include the difference in app prices, and differences in consumer use. These characteristics require a different thought process in iPad design and development, going beyond simply increasing image resolutions for the bigger device.

* China is chosen as the reference point in this comparison, but China is not the country with the globally lowest revenue for #1 grossing app or in terms of revenue per download.

Methodology

To find out more about the data behind this infographic, please visit the App Annie Intelligence page.

East Asia - Land of the Rising Downloads: A measure of the growth of downloads and revenues from all iOS apps in China and Japan from Jan 2011 to Dec 2011.

Norway - Planet of the big money downloads: A measure of the average revenue generated per downloaded iOS app in all countries in 2011.

Biggest prize money in the US: An indexed measure of the local revenue earned in 2011 by the top grossing iOS app in each country.

In-App Purchase (IAP) revenues rocket: A measure of the total revenue earned by the top 100 grossing iOS apps with in-app purchase, and the top 100 grossing iOS apps without in-app purchase in 2011.

Taking flight - Growth rate of iPad downloads: A measure of the growth rate of iOS downloads on iPad against that on iPhone in 2011.

iPad - A significant slice of the iOS pie: A percentage breakdown of total iOS revenue (iPhone+iTouch, iPad) in 2011.

iPad - double the dollar sunshine: A measure of the revenue generated by iOS app download on iPad against that on iPhone in 2011.

Apple Goes Local In China

The scale of China's consumer base is simply daunting, but can Apple take advantage?

Most developers in mainland China actually concentrate on international markets like Japan, SE Asia as well as Western regions since they find it much easier to monetize their games here. Many of the top mobile games in Japan for example are developed by Chinese companies. So we decided to ask Chinese game publishers what they thought of this news. Most welcomed it and said they were considering diverting more resources into the Chinese market than they had previously allocated. Haining Wang, CEO of Happy Elements, a leading Chinese game developer, had this to say:

"This news is a catalyst to push us to consider the Chinese market as soon as possible. So, it probably will speed up our process to launch mobile games in China. About whether we would focus more on China, we would need to monitor market performance to make the decision."

As it stands today, China's share of iOS world free downloads currently far outweighs that of world revenues, but this gap should shrink significantly in the near term. Here's why:

  • Expansion of Payment Options
Although Apple's move does not include web-based payment solutions such as AliPay (similar to PayPal), using local bank cards will decrease transaction cost for many users. According to Haining, this move will convert a lot of users who currently only download free apps into paid users.
  • Targeting Hackers
Empowering Chinese customers to use local banks is also expected to combat their need for finding alternatives, which often results in hacking. A recent story about Apple's business in China was the use of "Black Cards", or hacked iTunes account cards that consumers buy from unlicensed third parties. Unfortunately, despite the use of local currency, "The high rate of black cards in China might last for a long time if Apple or Taobao don’t take any action against it," says Haining. Taobao has taken steps to block keywords from its search and take down illicit items, but in a country where most software can be gotten at a significant discount, or even free, it is unrealistic to think that issues like this will disappear. Over the coming months we'll monitor how Apple deals with hackers in China.
  • Plastic's Proliferation in the World's Largest Consumer Market
Another major factor in Apple's potential is China's ever-expanding credit card market, which Mastercard has predicted will become the largest in the world by 2020. As credit cards are more seamlessly incorporated into consumers' lives, especially if Apple's next phone is NFC capable, their revenues in China should keep surging upward.

  • Strong Performance of Hardware Products

A few months ago, Penn Olson included this infographic, made by Motley Fool, in a report about China's taste for Apple.

    China Adoption Infographic

iPhone and iPad adoption in China has been remarkably strong. According to a report on China Mobile by Bloomberg, Apple is so popular that even customers who don't have 3G are buying iPhones and downloading apps.

Wait and Watch, and Count
Given Chinese consumers' taste for Apple, the new ability to link iTunes to their credit card and a widened product price range, not to mention the upcoming local release of the iPhone 4S, look for China's App Store to become a major contributor to the App Store's bottom line. We'll be tracking these stats here at App Annie and will report back on the development of China's Apple Store.

The Importance of Localization in App Stores

What's the best way to penetrate foreign app stores? There's a case for localization.

Global Free Download and Revenue Share Slide

If you want to maximize your app's revenue on iOS, recent data shows that you're going to have to think bigger than just the U.S. market. According to our September statistics, the U.S. accounted for just 28% of the free download market and just 34% of global revenue from iPhone apps.

One point stuck out from this slide: language. In both cases of free download and revenue share, the number two spot behind the U.S. is occupied by an East Asian country with a non-Latin writing system (China and Japan). Also, 50% of the countries within the top 10 for downloads and revenue are non-English speaking countries from Europe and East Asia. The question is, if an app publisher wishes to gain traction in these countries in terms of downloads and revenues, how important is it to localize one's apps? We'll be looking at this in more detail over the coming weeks, but we thought we'd first show you some simple statistics generated from our free web product Store Stats. The graph below shows the extent to which localized apps dominate the top 25 in Asian and European countries. We decided to investigate a little further.

North of 60% of the top 25 iPhone apps in Korea have Korean names and the other East Asian countries Japan, Taiwan and China lie between 30% and 60%. Nearly 50% of the top 25 apps in China are Chinese language apps. Clearly the propensity of users in these countries to download and to spend money within English-language apps is much lower than in other countries. And understandably. If one really wants to break into the charts for East Asian countries, you really need to think about localization of your app into their native language to increase your chances.

Is localization less important in European countries? There does seem to be a greater prevalence of English language apps in these countries where the standard of English language understanding is much higher and where the culture is much closer. The iPhone free downloads charts for France, Italy, Germany and Spain all have close to 90% penetration by English language apps. However, we've seen in other platforms such as on Facebook that companies such as Zynga and 6waves have seen major success when they launched localized versions of their app (see Cityville's launch in French, Italian, German and Spanish which was the company's most successful game launch ever). The console games industry has been localizing games for decades with great commercial success. Many of these companies have also started localizing for iOS and expect to see the percentage of local language apps dominating national app store charts increase over the next year.

We speak to many app publishers globally, and the appetite to localize one's apps is strong indeed. When you weigh the cost-benefit ratio, you have to consider the incremental downloads and revenue you can gain from strategies like this. The preliminary evidence so far indicates that localization will go a long way to expanding your download and revenue funnel internationally. Expect to see more data insights from us in this area.

Thanks for reading, and we look forward to keeping you in the know.

iOS Games Now Available in Korea!

South Korean now allows games in their iOS App Store, and we already have the data to prove it!

Games Available in Korea! The Games Ratings Board (GRB), the South Korean governmental body that rates video and computer games based on their content, has repealed their long-time ban on games from the iOS App Store. For Korean game developers, whose games have been barred from the iTunes App store in South Korea, they can now head to our rankings page to see how they're doing on the homefront! There's speculation in the news that this decision is related to the upcoming release of the iPhone 4S in Korea next week. Whatever the reason, we're happy that we can now provide all of our users with a whole new area of market data.

It’s the first time we are integrating with a third party provider; Smaato’s vision was a perfect match with App Annie leading market intelligence services”, said Bertrand Schmitt, CEO of App Annie.

App Annie market intelligence services also provide information like the number of downloads needed to reach the top downloads lists in certain app stores. E.g.: On average in the US you need 3.5 times more downloads or revenues to reach top 25 compared to the top 100, but to reach from the top 25 to top 10 you need 1.6 times more downloads and 1.3 times more revenues. Furthermore compared to the US to reach the top 25, on average in France you need 6.3 less downloads, while in Germany you need 5.7 less downloads.

These statistics underline the intense competition inside the App Store, and thus the need for a well orchestrated marketing campaign.

“We are glad to partner with App Annie on providing more value and insights for our iPhone/iPad app developers. This service now helps our partners to monitor their success in the different markets and give them insights about the iOS marketplace“, said Ragnar Kruse, CEO & Co-Founder, Smaato Inc.

iAd Revenues Integrated into App Annie Reports

We're happy to say that iAd revenues are now included in all App Annie sales reports!

Whether on your sales view, dashboard, or daily email update, all revenue figures now include iAd income. That means one less place to check for an alternate revenue source, and more comprehensive sales summaries and reports.

Should you want to compare iAd revenue with your other revenue sources, just check your stacked revenue graph for a crystal clear breakdown:

Many thank to all the users who helped us test this feature. We'll be introducing an Alpha program for preview-testing in the near future, so stay tuned.

Should you have any feedback or suggestions regarding iAd support, please let us know at feedback@appannie.com.

App Annie's Daily Report Arrives in Your Inbox!

App Annie users should notice something new arriving in their inboxes starting this morning: App Annie's Daily Report.

App Annie's Daily Report

The daily report has a summary that shows:

  • How much revenue was generated and downloads made from the previous day.
  • How much those figures have changed from the same day last week.
  • If any app is listed in the app store rankings (top 200).
  • If any app is featured on the app store.
  • If any app has been pulled from the app store.

App-specific data is also presented for each of your active apps:

  • The latest ranks in all categories for your preferred store.
  • New reviews since yesterday, with their average rating and the first 20 listed.

In case you'd rather not receive this email, you can configure your email preferences at the Account Settings page.

The daily report is something that our users have requested since App Annie launched, and it's something we have spent a lot of time thinking about and polishing. We will continue to improve this report in the future, and as always welcome feedback and suggestions from our users!

Use App Annie on your iPad, Plus Other Updates!

Starting today, App Annie is the first app tracking and analytics website to work fully on the iPad and iPhone.

Finally, you can hold your sales in your hands. And let us tell you, it feels phenomenal (really, it’s a dream).

We’ve revamped our entire graphing system to use a HTML5-powered solution, since the iPad doesn’t support Flash, and made many other iPad usability changes.

Our App Care users may have noticed a few other changes to App Annie as well. The update today also includes these updated reports:

  • A redesigned dashboard focused on how your apps are doing “right now”
  • Updated sales reports with more in-depth tabular data.
  • An expanded “Countries” report, breaking down sales by countries over time.

Finally, we’ve introduced an important new feature to App Annie’s sales reporting: period comparisons. Figures shown on the dashboard and sales reports are now accompanied by percentages that show you exactly how much your sales have increased or decreased compared to the previous week, month, or selected period of time.

This is just another way to quickly and accurately pinpoint an important statistic, and period comparisons have been added in a way that makes the most sense for iPhone/iPad developers. For instance, the default dashboard comparison considers a period of 7 days, since app sales are known to fluctuate in a weekly pattern: peaking on the weekends and dipping lower over the week.

Thanks to everyone who has participated in the beta so far, and feel free to let us know what you think of this latest update!

Cheers,
The App Annie Team

New iPad Top Charts

Since we released screenshots of the iPad app store, Annie has been completely flattered by all the attention she's received.

Last night, Apple updated the main iTunes app store with iPad apps. Now that it's official, Annie has been working vigorously to integrate live iPad top charts in to our site, and we're happy to say her work has paid off! The result is a live chart of the top 100 iPad apps.

As with the regular top 500, the iPad Charts are updated daily, and you can filter them by category. You can also click on any app to see it's details and screenshots.

There are lots of new apps in the feed, and there will certainly be more as Apple finalizes approvals for the launch of the iPad tomorrow. Annie is particularly excited about Mirror's Edge for iPad, since she is a big fan of its heroine Faith Connors.

iPad App Store Screenshots

UPDATE 3/27: The latest top charts for iPad-specific apps can be found here.

While preparing for the iPad launch next week and searching for clues on what it might look like, we stumbled across the actual iPad feed for the app store. Here's how the app store home page will probably look like:

Even more interesting is that there are already some apps listed in the iPad-specific top ranking charts for top paid, free, and grossing apps. Among the apps listed are "HD" versions of Labyrinth 2 and Flight Control, and we've taken screenshots of each of the charts here: for Free/Paid, and Grossing.

App Annie herself is naturally very excited about the new iPad feeds, and expects to have them properly integrated into the site by April 3rd.

The App Store Top 5 Matrix - What apps are popular around the world?

We all know what the top 100 apps are in a particular store and a particular category, but which apps are popular around the world and across categories?

While creating App Annie, we spent quite a lot of time coming up with different ways to show rankings across categories and countries. A cool visualization we cooked up along the way is the Top 5 Matrix.

App Annie Top 5 Matrix

The matrix gives an idea of which apps are achieving success across national and categorical boundaries, as well as which apps from Paid or Free are also making the most money.

If you're interested in one app, you can hover over its icon to reveal other appearances of the same app in the matrix.

Matrix Mouseover Highlight

By default, the matrix shows the top overall ranked apps across countries, but you can change this using the filters to the left. And as always, you can look back in time using the drop-down by the date.

Check it out at http://www.appannie.com/matrix/.

Introducing App Annie - now in open beta!

As developers, we always struggled to keep up on our apps in the app store. iTunes Connect just seemed inadequate, and accessing reviews and rankings through the iTunes browser was too slow and limited. It was like driving blindfolded — we had no answers to important questions such as where our apps were popular and what their highest rankings were.

Our solution was to create a tracking tool that automatically captured, aggregated, and visualized the data already available so we could see simple facts as well as more subtle trends. The tool has been so useful to us that we’ve decided to share it with the app development community.

We're happy to finally release App Annie in to the wild, and hope to get lots of feedback from other app developers. Here’s a quick summary of what she’s geared with out of the box:

  • An "App Care" section that sports iTunes Connect integration with comprehensive reports on sales as well as rankings and reviews.
  • A "Store Stats" section that contains all ranking information on all stores in all categories, visualized in comprehensive top 500 charts and unique at-a-glance graphical top 5 matrices, all armed with a variety of filtering options.

Whether you use App Annie to track your apps or to research the app store, we're sure that you will, as we did, find many interesting, quirky, and occasionally important patterns in the data. Please, share these discoveries with us, and don't forget to be liberal with your feedback on the site!

App Annie will be free for the duration of this open beta, but we do plan to eventually make "App Care" a premium subscription service. We expect the beta to last 6-12 weeks.

Be sure to subscribe to this blog and the "Ask Annie" newsletter to get updates on interesting analysis and research for the app store. And, if you have something you’re wondering about, feel free to use the site to ask Annie yourself.

Enjoy the site!
The AppAnnie Team, & App Annie herself
